Paani Puri launches in SOBO Mumbai

After months of anticipation – on 22nd April 2010 – the Paani Puri family saw the first collection of Paani Puri Clothing being launched at SOBO Mall in Tardeo.

We would like to thank actor Imran Khan and his fiancé Avantika for taking the time to come and attend the launch ! Despite his busy schedule Imran showed Paani Puri much love and support !

We’d also like to thank Shagun Shah and Kinjal Parikh of SOBO – that’s them with Rish and Imran. (From L to R : Rish, Kinjal, Shagun, Imran)

You're not the only one thinking that... I am too! Since April 20, 2009, I have dreamt each day that I could proudly say that the Paani Puri Online Store is open.

After 36 hours of non-stop work on the final details, barely any sleep, and watching people code on their computers, I can proudly say we are open!

These are our first 5 designs so you can get a feel of what's to come next. Every few days we will release more and as always, we will keep you posted on what's going on.

The journey of starting a company from scratch, in a country you are unfamiliar with is one of the most rewarding, challenging, and enriching experiences of my life. Although I am grateful for all the things I learn't while growing up in the United States, I have to thank India for letting me live my dream and accomplish my goals after moving here 1.5 years ago. I have fallen deeply in love with this country, and more so this vibrant city, Bombay.

Artists need freedom, that is the way we are built. A year back, I was a lost artist, confused, ill confident and unemployed. I could not find a job that fit my profile. However I believe that there is no such thing as coincidence. I met Rishab when he got here, to India that is, and we both knew our careers at the time lacked a certain passion. Work should never be work, we both knew that.

I started designing t shirts for fun for some online t shirt sites, for the heck of it. He happened to see some of these and then "Eureka" :) he had an idea that rocked my world!

In the beginning i was very skeptical about the whole thing, "Paani Puri???? can u actually call a clothing brand that?? was my first ever question to him. We worked on it then, not knowing where this might lead, day in day out, not knowing why or how, it was a calling. We knew we had to do this, though we didn't know why.

Initially we were just testing the entire thing, but his focus and determination greatly influenced and motivated me. Needless to say we made a good team. Like they say, the rest is history!

If a year back, someone would have told me " Your art on a Paani Puri tee will be featured in Verve and Marie Claire magazine, or that it would have 1075 and counting fans on Facebook, i would have be in shock and total denial" This is however a reality, and I am so proud to see this Baby grow.

Why I enjoy Paani Puri? Cause i love it, i wake up to it every single day, i look forward to it, in seeing it grow it has helped me grow as an artist.Its given me freedom, its given me challenges, its given me relationships, its given me energy. I feel so much more confident! There was a time where this would all seem surreal.

I believe God always puts you through the toughest times so when you do reach a checkpoint and look back, you can truly appreciate where you have reached. I do not know where this road is taking us, but i know at the end of it all, it will definitely be an amazing journey. Artists need freedom, that is the way we are built, Paani Puri gives me that freedom, that is why it was built.

The New Flavour Of Clothing

Paani Puri Goes Pirate !

A couple of weeks ago (10th October to be precise) – I (ok I think it’s better to say ‘we’ because the Paani Puri team is a family) … We were invited by Miss Malini (don’t you know her – she’s the cute RJ from Radio One) to come on air on her new show ‘Pirate Radio’ alongside Imran Khan ! Talk about 2 high energy shocks in one day !

So to thank this young lady – we customized some of the packaging to give away on the show and Imran Khan agreed to sign them as well for the lucky winners ! If you don’t believe me check out the picture below – he really did sign them and the packaging was really customized =)

Paani Puri isn’t just about the packaging – and we wanted everyone on the show to really feel the lurve that goes into the making of each t-shirt – so we gave Imran and Malini both t-shirts to wear ….

Miss Malini shared some of the video links with us … and now all of you Paani Puri fans and followers get to check us out LIVE !

As you can see – I was a bit nervous (who wouldn’t be – it’s not like I’m used to being in the limelight) but the show went off really well and that’s all that matters =)

My Dazed Puri Discovery

So here’s how it all started a few weeks ago … all on Facebook ! I kept seeing the words ‘pani puri’ and it got me craving to eat some Bombay style chaats !

Translation of ‘paani puri paane ke liey kuch khona padtha hai ..’ To get a ‘pani puri’ then you must give up something (precious / meaningful) to you

I’ve known Sabrina a.k.a. Sabu for a long time and I’ve always associated her and Pani Puri with good memories and crazy cravings !

It came down to a point that I kept seeing Rish’s tweets and FB status updates about Paani Puri and I really did begin to get concerned that maybe he was just obsessing on the food so much .. so I did what any good friend would do .. Pin him down and find out WHY he was going on and on about it …

And that’s the secret folks ! My very good friend – Rish Oberoi – has just launched his own line of very funky out-of-the-box style urban t-shirts called ‘Paani Puri Clothing’ !

Welcome to what I’d like to call my Paani Puri Cave !

Noooo this isn’t a joke – that’s really where I work from … I live on that couch (it’s also the most comfy couch ever!) – I eat there – and many a night – I have slept there too !

That’s me quite serious at work – there are a lot of Twitter and FaceBook Fans that I have to respond to – it’s my social responsibility to spread the Paani Puri Luuuuuurve !

Whaaaaat ? You didn’t believe I was working ???? Just because I sit on a big fat cozy looking couch ?? Check out the Puri’s on the screen – that ought to remind you that all I’ve got on my mind is Paani Puri !

The first Paani Puri T-shirt ! I keep it hanging there on the cupboard (and it covers the TV too so there’s no distractions) so that it’s the first thing I see in the morning when I wake up. I just want more and more Paani Puri tee’s out there for the world to enjoy !

At the end of a long and productive day – I take a few minutes to just sit back and take a breather … slouching over a laptop all day doesn’t help my back .. and I think its time for me to catch some Zzzz’s !

What's The Puri ?

“Paani Puri!? Clothing? A Clothing Company!? Really?!? That’s crazy! silly! and even goofy!

YUP! that is the same reaction we've received every single day since 5:30am on April 20,2009. 5:30am!?!

WHAT?? Yes, at 5:30am Rish Oberoi was watching Batman-The Dark Knight, but could only think to himself, "how amazing would Paani Puri be right now?“

While sitting there in a daze, hoping to somehow find Paani Puri around his house, he began to think how funny, no, how CRAZY!! it would be if “The Joker” was eating Paani Puri!!!

This thought stuck in his mind, and that very same day he went through his phone book to call anyone who could create this image … And

He found her! Wait Wait, before we go on, our designer is actually called EUREKA! (this is the most serious part of the story and not a joke….).

That’s how Paani Puri started; simply "a joke made into a reality."

Pani Puri For Dummies

Unless you’re an Indian from India or a person of Indian origin OR just a foodie at heart -here’s a bit of a filler for you

Pani Puri (pronounced ‘pah-ni poo-ree’) or Golgappa ('pronounced ‘goal-gup-pa) is a popular street snack for most Indians. It’s basically a round, hollow "puri", fried crisp and filled with a waterymixture of tamarind, chili, chaat masala, potato, onion and chickpeas. It is bite size and enough to pop in the mouth (unless you have a REALLY small mouth!).

The term golgappa refers to the fact that crisp sphere ("gol") is placed in the mouth and eaten ("gappa") at one time, without biting. Pani comes from the Hindi word for water and puri (or poori), an Indian bread made by frying dough in oil.

At this point you must be wondering what’s with the description about Pani Puris ?
